Abstract

In recent years, mobile multimedia devices have gained increasing relevance in classrooms. We have used tablets (24.1 cm by 18.6 cm touchscreen devices) during biology lessons to analyse oxygen generation during photosynthesis as well as for documenting the procedure (video) and learning steps for 100 pupils aged 12–15 years. With respect to knowledge, the quasiexperimental study revealed a significantly increased, yet only temporarily lasting, benefit in the boys’ group using tablets. No statistical differences in the knowledge performance were observed after 3 weeks between the study and control groups, irrespective of sex. However, the study revealed a higher intrinsic motivation when using new media.
